Prof Ioannis Darzentas
Systems thinking, knowledge management, human-computer interaction

John Darzentas is Head of the Department of Product and Systems Design at the University of the Aegean. He brings to the summer school a wide knowledge of systems thinking and human-computer interaction, and will show how the philosophies and models used in systems design can challenge and inform our approach to information design. He has a doctorate from Royal Holloway College, University of London.

Dr Jenny Darzentas
Usability, user-testing, accessibility, design for all, interface design

Jenny works in the Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering of the University of the Aegean, Greece as a researcher and instructor, teaching courses in Design for All and Information Design. She has published many papers on the design of accessible and usable content, and has a doctorate from City University, London.

Prof Clive Richards
Diagramming, visualisation, design education

Clive Richards is a leading design educator, formerly Professor of Information Design at Coventry University, and now Visiting Professor at Brighton University. He is President of the International Institute of Information Design, a former President of the Chartered Society of Designers in the UK, and a trustee of the Simplification Centre. He has a doctorate from the Royal College of Art in London, for his influential work on diagrammatics, and he was an early pioneer of computer animation and computer-aided drafting.

Jenny Waller
Simplifying complex documents, management communications, editorial structures, skills training

Jenny Waller’s career has included both teaching and professional communications. She has worked in technical documentation, and change management communications for large organisations, such as British Steel, DHL and Guinness, and taught information design at Coventry University, where she was Head of Information Design. She developed and leads the Simplification Centre’s training programme, and is currently completing a doctorate on fine art education at the University of Reading.

Dr Rob Waller
Financial and government information, design patterns and genres, wayfinding

Rob Waller is the Director of the Simplification Centre. He was a professional information designer for twenty years, working with major service brands such as Vodafone, AXA, Barclays, and British Gas, before becoming Professor of Information Design at the University of Reading, where he originally gained his doctorate for research on typography and discourse. He was the founder-editor of Information Design Journal, and co-founder of the Information Design Association in the UK.

Prof Karel van der Waarde
Health and pharmaceutical information. User-testing, regulation of design, design education

Karel van der Waarde is Professor of Visual Rhetoric at Avans University of Applied Sciences. With a doctorate on the subject from the University of Reading, he is a leading expert on medical communications, and user-testing, and his clients include many well known names such as Bayer, Procter & Gamble and Glaxo Smith Kline. He has published numerous papers on information design research and is a frequent conference speaker on information design and research.
